I'm done. That's the only thing I can think about now. Except I can't be done. It's nit possible.
I feel like this is all I talk about lately but it's consuming my life right now. I need sleep. It's not a matter of wanting it anymore it's a matter of need. I'm a mess. I can no longer function. I've struggled with depression in the past. I was dealing with PPD after Mary-Grace was born. Then I got pregnant and stupidly though I didn't need to worry about PPD anymore because pregnancy was going to magically cure it or something. I'm not sure if I'm still having PPD issues or if I'm slipping back into a depression. But I do know this feeling and I don't like it.
I don't feel like myself anymore. I can't stop crying. I pace the hall all night, Mary-Grace screaming, me crying. Every morning for the last two weeks I have sobbed as K left for work, begging him to stay home. I've called him sobbing begging for him to come home. Then I feel terrible. How can I do that to him and make him feel guilty for going to work. He is doing everything in his power to support us and I'm making him feel guilty for it.
I'm sleep deprived and feel like crap. Actually, I think crap is too nice of a word. I've begged and pleaded with God. Something as to give. She doesn't sleep at night. She's up every hour. By the time I get her back to sleep I'm getting only about 30 minutes of sleep at a time. She only cat naps during the day. When she's awake she must me held. I can put her in her jumpy thing for about 10 minutes but that's it. Don't get me wrong, I love snuggling my baby, but I can't hold her all night and then the 11 hours that K's at work. I need to pee, or eat, or do laundry, or just sit without a 16 pound attachment.
K has been trying so hard to help at night. But the fact is that he can't feed her so if she's hungry I have to get up anyway. Heck, even if she's not hungry, nursing her is usually the only way to get her back to sleep.
We have a pediatrician appointment next Wednesday. I'm going to talk to him about this. I'm doubt it will lead to anything helpful but we'll see.
On days like today I feel like a horrible mother. I try to tell myself that it will eventually get better. But then I remember that come Match there will be another little one in this house. More sleepless nights. I cannot see the light at the end of the tunnel. I feel so ridiculous. It's just sleep. But this lack of sleep is causing me to be in a place mentally, emotionally and spiritually that I do not want to be.
I would do just about anything for a few hours of uninterrupted sleep. I miss my Nana. I know she would have loved to hold and play with MG while I got some rest.
If you could spare a prayer please do. Either that I get some sleep or that I get to a better place when it comes to handling it.

Long overdue final update (such a good one)!

I'm so sorry you are in such a rough patch. I can't imagine having to deal with pregnancy stuff and the stress of a high-needs 6 month old (M-G sounds even more high-needs than K) at the same time. Praying for you.
ReplyDeleteI will pray for you! I just had my first and the sleep thing is so difficult. I have been working PPVI on PPD issues myself!
ReplyDeleteI've been there before except mine was related to Graduate School. If you lived closer I would totally help you.
ReplyDeleteI'm so sorry. Is there a neighbor/friend/family member in or out of town who could help out? Sleep plays SUCH a huge role in a mom's mental health... especially a pregnant mom with a baby. It's too much to handle, otherwise. Can you pump for a bottle or two for the daytime for someone to watch MG at THEIR home while you sleep at yours? I haven't looked back at previous posts, but has she started solids? Maybe some extra food would help her sleep a bit longer so you can get some sanity back. Again, I'm so sorry you're feeling so down now. It WILL get better, even though when you're in the middle of it, it never feels that way. Hang in there!!
ReplyDeleteOh K! I just want to give you a hug! I need to go back and read the comments from your post asking for advice. Something that we had to do for Avery was a modified Ferber method. We would put her in her bed, and then I would leave the room. I would let her fuss and cry for 2 minutes, and then I would go in an comfort her. Then, I would repeat, and if during the time I was gone, she stopped crying or started to calm down, I either didn't go in or I extended the time before going in there to 5 minutes. Etc.
ReplyDeleteAn aha moment for us was when I read that babies cycle through sleep every hour, and when babies wake up at night, they need things to be the same way they were when they fell asleep the first time.
It would be like an adult waking up to find his pillow on the floor. Most of us need to put the pillow back for us to fall back asleep. Babies are the same way.
I think Lauren recommended the No Cry Sleep Solution on her blog, and I love that book. She has great suggestions including one for teaching kids to fall asleep without being on the boob. :) haha
It was so useful with Avery, and then I learned so much from the book that I was able to prevent the same issues from happening with Lucy. Although, every kid is different so we will see if it is effective with Liam.
I am praying for you! I hope you can get this figured out and get some sleep!
Oh Karen. My heart breaks for you. I wish I were closer.
ReplyDeleteI'm so sorry to read this Karen... I'm praying that you can get some uninterrupted sleep soon! Obviously, I can't speak from experience, but I did read the no-cry sleep solution and I have some friends who swear by it. I got it out of the library... maybe some of her tips can help!
ReplyDeleteMaybe you also need to go to the doctor if you're that depressed.
ReplyDeleteOh Karen, I have written these very words. PPD combined with a high need/non sleeping baby and a pregnancy is a recipe for a sad and angry and crazy Mom:)
ReplyDeleteI know you need help right now and my suggestions will sound severe. So I'm going to keep them to myself and instead tell you I am praying for you all the time. I know where you are. I do. I have made those same phone calls to the hubs and still do occasionally. I am scared that my PPD is leading to neglect of my family and I am right. Infants have a crappy sleep cycle and when they dont' back to sleep well, it's even worse. I wish I lived closer. I'd come over and let you nap. It sounds so silly, to need a nap. But sleep is restorative and you will go crazy without adequate amounts of it. Would it help to talk to someone (like moi) that can relate? I am happy to sit on the other end of the phone and just listen and say "that sucks!".
It's hard to love yoru child and love your role as a Mother when it's this difficult. Praying for you right now.
Prayers for sleep soon!
